   那首饮酒歌原来的曲作者是一位名叫史密斯（John Stafford Smith）的英国人，1777年他为一首题为《致天堂里的阿那克里翁》（To Anacreonin Heaven）的诗谱了曲，供伦敦“阿那克里翁协会”的成员宴饮时咏唱。
   史密斯谱的曲大概具有好听又易唱的特点，传到美国以后很快就被填上不同的歌词来演唱。到凯伊写《星光闪耀的旗帜》的时候，其歌词据说已不下几十种，而且凯伊本人九年前便曾为它填过另一首词。《星光闪耀的旗帜》旋律广为人知，深受人们喜爱，而歌词又表达了对新生独立祖国的热爱。
  因此，这首歌虽然起初只以“手抄本”（hand bill）流传，但很快就被巴尔的摩报纸刊载，接着就在整个美国广为传唱。在美国内战期间（1861-1865年），这首歌曾经被林肯领导的联邦军用作非正式的军歌。
  半个世纪以后，在第一次世界大战期间，它又被出征欧陆的美军当作军歌。这表明，每到国难当头，它那发自肺腑的民族情感就会在美国人民心中引起深深的共鸣。在这种情况下，美国国会终于顺从民意，通过法案，规定它为美国国歌。
