THE FISHERMAN AND THE FLOUNDER
Once upon a tine there was an fisherman who lived with his wife in a poor hover bear the sea。
For thirty—three years the old fisherman went out to fish every day while the old woman was spinning at home。
One day the fisherman caught a flounder on his line。 Talking like a human the flounder begged the fisherman to let her go back into the sea, saying if he did so he could get whatever he wished for。
The kind fisherman didn’t ask for anything, but put the fish back into the sea, and said some kind words to bless her。
Then the fisherman went home, and told his wife about this strange thing。 The old woman cursed the old man saying he should have wished for something, if it were only a wooded tub。
The man did not know what to do。 So he went back to the blue sea to tell the flounder his wife’s wish。
“Just go home,” said the flounder。 “God bless you。 You’ll soon get a new tub。”
When the fisherman arrived home, they really had a new tub。
This time the old woman cursed the old man sharply for his foolishness and told him to go back to the flounder for a cottage。
The fisherman went back to the blue sea which was no longer calm。 The old man told the goddess--the flounder his wife’s wish。
The flounder readily agreed。
As the fisherman approached home, the hovel disappeared。 Instead, in front of him the old woman would curse him even more fiercely。
She wanted to be a hereditary lady。
When he got to the sea, the water could now be seen to be billowing and churning。
But still the flounder agreed to his request。
Then the man went home。 He saw the cottage had become a castle and the old woman was gorgeously dressed。
She not only cursed and beat the servants, but drove the old man to the stable to be a servant。
Weeks passed, the old woman became more and more discontented, and ordered the old man to go to and tell the flounder that she wanted to be a queen in leisure and comfort。
The man did not want to go, but the old woman swore at him and slapped his face。
So the fisherman could only go once more to the sea and told the flounder his wife’s wish。
The flounder promised his request would be fulfilled。
Then as the man went home, the castle became a palace。
The old woman was Queen。 Meanwhile, barons, counts and dukes were her servants。 As soon as she saw the old man enter, she ordered soldiers to drive him out。
Sometime later, the old woman grew dissatisfied。 She sent for the old man to tell the flounder that she wished to be the ruler of the sea, and have the beautiful flounder as her servant。
The old man did not dare to disobey, and went to the sea。 He saw the sea rise up in waves and roar。
After the flounder heard his words, she did not say anything, but, flapping her tail, swam out into the deep sea。
The fisherman did not get any answer , so he went home。 What he saw in front of him was the poor hovel。
The old woman was sitting on the threshold, and in front of her was the old, shabby tub。
